What the Readability Checker is
The Readability and Content Grade Checker is a free page that tells you how hard your writing is to read. Paste a page of copy and it gives a Reading Ease score from 0 to 100 and a US school grade level. Lower grade means easier to read. It uses the Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formulas, which look at sentence length and word length.
What you get when you run it
You paste at least 30 words and click the button. You see the Reading Ease score, a verdict, an approximate grade level, and your word, sentence, long-sentence and passive-voice counts. After you enter your name and email, the breakdown opens.
- Sentences longer than 25 words, listed so you can split them
- Sentences that look like passive voice
- Your average sentence length, flagged when it runs above 22 words
Syllables are estimated, so scores can differ a little from other tools.
Why we built the Readability Checker
In audits we often find pages written for the author, not the visitor. Long sentences, stacked clauses and internal jargon make a good service sound like hard work. Owners rarely see it because they know the subject. We wanted a quick, neutral number that shows when copy is harder than it needs to be, and points at the exact sentences causing it.
Who should use this checker
Use it if you write service pages, landing pages, emails or guides for people who are not experts in your field. It helps owners reviewing agency or freelancer drafts, and teams with several writers who need one standard. Check the pages that matter most first: your homepage, your main service pages and your contact flow.
Why easy reading drives results
Most visitors skim, often on a phone, and often while doing something else. If a sentence takes effort, many will leave rather than reread it. Easier copy does not mean simpler ideas. It means less work for the reader, even an expert one. When a buyer understands what you do, who it is for and what happens next, they are more likely to contact you.
Why this matters more now
People now get answers from AI assistants and search summaries before they ever visit a site. Those tools favor clear statements they can lift and repeat accurately, and long, tangled sentences are easier to misread or skip. Visitors who do arrive often come with a specific question and little patience. Plain, direct sentences serve both: a person scanning a phone screen and a system extracting what your business offers.
How brands win with clear writing
Brands that write clearly set a target reading level and keep to it. Their sentences make one point. They use the words customers use, not internal labels. They lead with the answer and put detail underneath. They cut sentences that exist only to sound professional. You can feel it as a visitor: the page seems to know what you came for, and it gets you there fast.
How to make your copy easier to read
- Check your key pages and note the grade level and the long sentences.
- Split any sentence over 25 words into two. Aim for one idea per sentence.
- Rewrite passive sentences so the doer comes first: "We audit your site," not "Your site is audited."
- Swap formal or technical words for the ones your customers use.
- Use short paragraphs and clear subheadings so the page can be scanned.
- Re-run the check and compare the score before and after.
How the checker helps with those steps
The checker finds your long and passive sentences for you, so steps two and three become a short edit instead of a read-through. Run it again to see whether the score moved. It measures structure, not meaning, so a low grade does not make copy good. If you want a full set of pages rewritten for clarity and conversion, our Content Writing service can do it.
Disclaimer
This tool is for information only. Reading scores come from standard formulas applied to your text, and syllable counts and passive-voice detection are estimates, so results can differ from other tools. A score cannot tell you whether copy is accurate, persuasive or right for your audience. The score runs in your browser, and unlocking the breakdown sends us your name and email, not your text.
Scoring the copy is the easy part.
Our Content Writing service rewrites it — on-brand, on-brief, and built to convert, not just to score well.
