What the UTM Link Builder is
The UTM Link Builder is a free tool that adds campaign tags to a web address. UTM tags are short labels at the end of a link, such as utm_source and utm_campaign. Your analytics tool reads them to learn where a visit came from.
You fill in a few fields and get one clean, tagged link ready to copy.
What the builder does and what you get
You enter your page URL, a source, a medium and a campaign name. Term and content are optional. The tool builds the link as you type.
- Lowercases your values, swaps spaces for dashes and drops unsafe characters, so tags stay consistent
- Adds the tags to the end of your URL, keeping any parameters already there
- Gives you a Copy button
- Lets you save links to a list for this browser session and download that list as a CSV
The URL must start with http:// or https://.
Why we built the UTM Link Builder
In audits we keep opening analytics reports full of traffic labeled Direct or split across variations like Facebook, facebook and fb. Different people tagged links in different ways, or did not tag them at all.
The data was there, but nobody could trust it. We built this tool so a team can make links the same way every time, with no spreadsheet of rules to remember.
Why use this tool and who it is for
Use it any time you share a link you want to measure: an email, a social post, a paid ad, a partner page or a QR code. It is for marketers, founders, agencies and anyone who sends traffic to a site and wants to know what worked.
It is especially useful when several people publish campaigns and need one naming style. It is free and runs in your browser.
Why campaign tagging matters
Analytics tools can only report what they can see. Without tags, many visits from emails, apps and messaging tools show up as Direct, and you cannot tell which effort paid off.
With consistent tags, you can compare channels, campaigns and creative, and connect them to leads and sales. Inconsistent tags are almost as bad as none, because the same channel splits into several rows and the totals mislead you.
Why this matters more now
More discovery now happens where referrer data is thin or missing: private messages, dark social, apps, and AI assistants that send people to your site with little context. Without tags, that traffic often lands in Direct.
Budgets are also under closer review. You need to show which campaigns drove results, not guess. Tags on links you control are the one source label you can set yourself, so use them on everything you publish.
How brands that get this right win
Teams that tag well agree on a short naming guide and stick to it. They use lowercase values, one spelling per channel, and campaign names that include a date or a purpose.
They tag every link they control in email, social, ads and partner posts. They keep a shared log of links. Then they review results by campaign and move money toward what works. Their reports need little cleanup.
What to do to improve your tracking
- Agree on a naming guide for source, medium and campaign, and write it down.
- Keep values lowercase, use dashes instead of spaces, and use one spelling per channel.
- Tag every link you control in emails, social posts, ads and partner pages.
- Never tag links between pages on your own site, because it can overwrite the true source of a visit.
- Keep a shared list of the links you create.
- Check your analytics reports after launch to confirm each tag appears as expected.
How the builder helps and when to go further
The builder handles steps 2 and 3 for you. It formats values the same way every time, builds a valid link, and lets you save and export a list so your team has a record.
It cannot check how your analytics tool reads the tags. If reports still look wrong, or conversions are not tied to campaigns, our Analytics Tracking Setup service fixes the setup behind the links.
Disclaimer
This tool is for information and convenience only. It builds a link from what you type and does not check that the destination page works or that your analytics tool will report the tags as you expect. Saved links stay in your browser session and are not sent to a server. Tag naming is a matter of your own reporting choices, and we do not guarantee any result from using the links.
Tagged links only help if someone reads the report.
Our Analytics Tracking Setup makes sure every campaign you tag actually shows up correctly in your reporting.
