Meta Tag Length Checker
Character counts lie — Google truncates by pixel width, and a "W" takes up way more room than an "i". Paste your title and description below to see the real cutoff, live. Nothing leaves your browser.

What the Meta Tag Length Checker is
This is a free tool that tells you whether your title tag and meta description will fit in a Google search result. Paste each one in and it measures the text in pixels, not just characters. It then shows a preview of the result as it would likely appear, with a cut-off point if the text is too long.
What it does with your text
As you type, the tool measures your title and description using Arial at the sizes Google's desktop results use. Then it:
- Shows the character count and pixel width against a limit of 580px for titles and 920px for descriptions.
- Fills a progress bar that turns red when you go over.
- Previews the result with the text cut off where it would be trimmed.
- Suggests a fitted version, trimmed at a whole word, when the text is too long.
Why we built the Meta Tag Length Checker
Most length checkers count characters. In audits we see titles that pass a 60-character rule but still get cut off, because wide letters take more room. We also see people trim a title by hand and cut the most important words by accident. We wanted a quick check that shows the real cutoff and where it lands in your text.
Who should use this checker
Use it when you write or edit a title or description and want to know if it will be trimmed. It is useful for anyone updating page copy in WordPress, Shopify or a similar platform, for marketers reviewing a list of pages, and for writers who need to hit a limit without guessing. It takes seconds and needs no setup.
Why title and description length matter
When a title is cut off, readers miss the end of it. If your brand name or main benefit sits there, it never gets seen. A truncated description can end mid-thought and make the page look careless. Text that fits lets you control the message people read before they decide to click.
Why this matters more now
Search results are now more crowded, with summaries, answer boxes and AI-written overviews sitting above or beside the regular listings. Your title and description have less room to stand out, so every word counts. Assistants and summaries also tend to pick up the opening of a page's title and description. Putting the key point first protects it wherever the text is shown.
How brands win with well-fitted tags
Strong brands write the point of the page into the first few words of the title. They keep descriptions to one or two clear sentences that end cleanly. They check wide characters like capital letters and symbols, and they test changes before publishing. They also revisit older pages, since long titles are common on pages written years ago.
How to fix titles and descriptions that run long
- Start with your most important words. Move the brand name to the end if you need space.
- Cut filler words and repeated phrases before you shorten the meaning.
- Paste the text into the checker and watch the pixel bar, not only the character count.
- Rewrite the description so it ends on a complete thought within the limit.
- Update the page, then check again on a phone, since mobile cuts off earlier.
- Repeat for your most visited pages first.
How this tool helps, and when to get an audit
The checker covers steps three and four. You see the cutoff live and get a trimmed version to start from. It treats one title and one description at a time. If you need every page on your site reviewed for length, duplicates and missing tags, our SEO Audit does that across the whole site.
Disclaimer
This tool is for information only. Google decides how to display each result and may rewrite your title or description, so the preview is an estimate. The limits are commonly cited figures and can change. We measure with Arial in your browser, which may differ slightly from what Google renders, and we do not measure mobile. Results are indicators, not guarantees.
